Registration in the Small Business Administration (SBA) Company Registry is required to participate in SBIR and STTR federal funding programs.  Although the SBA registration will likely only take you a few moments to complete, you will need your business’s UEI to complete the process. You will need to begin your SAM registration prior to SBA registration as your businesses UEI is generated as the initial part of the SAM registration.

Once you have entered the required information, detailed below, you will receive an email with login credentials and a password.  Be sure to check the email that you provided in your registration information for the account credentials.

Company registration in SBIR.gov requires the Unique Entity ID.  The UEI is the 12-character alphanumeric ID assigned to an entity by SAM.gov.

Ownership Information 

  • Is the SBC majority-owned by multiple venture capital operating companies, hedge funds, or private equity firms?  If so, what percentage? 
  • Is the SBC Woman-Owned?  To qualify as a women-owned small business (WOSB), a business must be at least 51% owned by one or more women, or in the case of any publicly owned business, at least 51% of the stock is owned by women, and women control the management and daily business operations. 
  • Can the SBC register as Socially/Economically Disadvantaged under SAM.gov?  To qualify, the SBC must be 51% or more owned and controlled by one or more disadvantaged persons.  The disadvantaged person or persons must be socially disadvantaged and economically disadvantaged.  Additional restrictions may apply if your firm is also woman owned.  More information is available at SBA.gov. 
  • Is the SBC HUBZone-Owned?  HUBZone is a US SBA program for small companies that operate and employ people in Historically Underutilized Business Zones (HUBZone).  Firms will need to reside within an area that has been determined to be HUBZone, meet eligibility requirements, and register with the SBA.
